Golden Eagles Earn Hard-Fought Win Over San Marcos

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team got a big second-half goal from Amber de Seriere and posted a hard-fought win over Cal State San Marcos.

After a scoreless first half, de Seriere and Khadijah Greenwood tallied goals to lead the Golden Eagles to a 2-1 win Wednesday night at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (2-0) was outshot, 10-6, in the second half, but goalkeeper Reyna Coca made five saves and the Golden Eagles hung on for the win.

In a physical, but scoreless first half, the Golden Eagles held a 5-0 edge in shots. Four yellow cards were issued – two on each side – and both teams battled to get the lead.

Finally, just three minutes into the second half, Greenwood picked up her third goal of the year with assists from Dana Menard and Erika Prado. The scoring play started on Menard's throw-in toward the goal. Prado was able to make an acrobatic kick and Greenwood quickly deflected it into the goal to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Cal State Monterey Bay (1-2-1) tied the game in the 57th minute. Randi Leyva got to a nicely-placed pass by Katelyn Krauss and knocked a shot into the goal to make it 1-1.

The Golden Eagles then got the game winner in the 69th minute. Amanda Matthews sent a free kick into the box and deSeriere was able to flick it into the left corner of the net to give Cal State L.A. a 2-1 lead.

The Golden Eagles finished the game with an 11-10 edge in shots.

Cal State L.A. will return to action with a road game against Cal Baptist on Saturday.
